The most important thing your friend can do when looking for a mover is to avoid the moving broker websites that often pop up on top with Google searches. They don’t vet there movers and are often playgrounds for disreputable movers.
Your friend should start by finding movers that are local to their origin (NYC). Local can include North Jersey, the Boroughs, CT and Long Island. A lot of the bigger movers won’t be in the actual city because they require more space for trucks and storage facilities.
I always suggest that people find local agents for the major van lines (United, Mayflower, etc.) because you can rest assured you won’t get scammed and you can enjoy some consistency in terms of equipment, procedures and claims resolution. That said, there are a lot of great independent movers out there as well – they just need to be vetted more thoroughly through sites like http://www.protectyourmove.gov and http://www.movingscam.com.
You’re friend should contact a couple movers to get a few bids. Those movers should send a representative to your friends home to look at what needs to be moved before giving a final estimate. Any mover that tells you this is unnecessary is being shady – it’s an important step in the process and it’s designed with the customer’s protection in mind.
